What do I need to start card making? A guide to card making

In a digital world so saturated with AI-created images and computer-generated art, nothing says ‘I care’ more than a handmade card. In fact, more people are turning to crafting their own greetings cards to reach out to that special friend or loved one.

But if you’ve ever considered creating your own cards, you’ll know just how daunting it can be. It’s not a case of simply scribbling on a sheet of paper – there’s far more to creating a truly special greetings card than just putting pen to paper.

At Paperbox, we love helping people create their own greetings cards, DIY wedding stationery, and so much more. It’s why we’ve put together this essential guide to card making, covering everything you’ll need throughout the process.

Just read on and find out how you can start making your own cards today.

Understanding your design

Before you even consider picking up your card and a pair of scissors, you need to understand exactly what you’re creating – only then can you know what you need.

For example, maybe you enjoy lino cut printing and that’s how you want to create your design, or perhaps you have a special digital design you’ve created on your computer that you’d like to print at home. Each will require a different set of tools to create that card.

First, decide what your card-making method will be – then you’ll know exactly what equipment you’ll need. That being said, there are a few essential pieces of equipment you’ll always want to have on hand.

Everything you need to start card making

Below, we’ve put together everything you’ll need as a complete beginner to get started with card making today.

Cardstock and paper

To make your own cards you’ll need a good collection of cardstock and paper, not just A4 card. You’ll need:

  • Insert papers to write on inside of your card – although this may not always be necessary
  • Envelopes in which to pack and send your card. Be sure to get the correct size for your card

Stamps, ink, markers and more

Whatever design you choose to use on your card, you’ll need the right equipment to make it happen. Of course, this will vary depending on how you choose to create your design, but this might include:

  • Stamps and inks to print a set design on the outside of your card
  • Pens and markers to create hand-drawn designs on your greeting cards
  • A printer for producing digital designs

Measuring and cutting tools

Card making is a precise art, and that’s why you’ll need to make sure everything is millimetre perfect and neat. To measure and cut your hand-made cards you’ll need:

  • Precise measuring equipment such as a standard 30 cm ruler
  • Scissors and a guillotine to cut precise straight edges and other shapes
  • A craft knife for trimming smaller pieces and the finer details
  • A straight edge to help when it comes to folding and creasing your card

Adhesives

To bring your card together, you’ll need a variety of adhesives. Each adhesive has a different use in DIY card making, but some essential options for any beginner card maker include:

  • Tape and double-sided tape useful for paper layers and anywhere you don’t want to use a liquid glue
  • Liquid glue and glue dots for adding detailed elements and binding the card; this might be PVA or another type
  • Adhesive foam pads can help create a 3D element in your card making

Added extras

When it comes to card making, the beauty is truly in the detail, and that’s why it’s important for every budding card crafter to have a good selection of extra decorations to top it all off. This could include:

  • Ribbon can add a touch of colour and texture to your card
  • Wax seals are an extra special way to close your envelope
  • String and twine add a beautiful finishing touch that can be used to decorate or seal your card
