How to display cards at a craft fair
A craft fair presents the perfect opportunity for you to sell your handmade products. In fact, while it’s certainly not as simple as running an online shop, it does offer the ideal chance for customers to see your work with their own eyes – and for you to build those vital connections with potential patrons.
But, just like card making, selling at a craft fair isn’t easy. There’s a lot to think about. Did you pack the card machine? Did you make enough stock? And how will you display your cards? While we can’t be there to remind you to pop the card machine in your bag, we can help with that last one.
So, let’s dive into why your card display matters – and some crucial tips that will help you wow the crowds.
Why does your card display matter?
So, why does your card display matter? Well, the truth is – because it will help you sell. And there’s a lot of research to back it up. A great display:
- Makes your brand and your crafts more memorable
- Attracts customers to your products
- Makes customers want to stop and look
- Invites people to pick up and engage with your cards
- Increases the perception of the quality of your products
- And increases your sales overall
So, now we know just how important it is – let’s take a look at our top tips for how to display cards at a craft fair.
1. Understand your space
Before you can start laying out your cards and envelopes, you need to understand what is – and isn’t – possible with the space. Often, it’s best to do this ahead of the craft fair — getting to know the space and what’s possible. You’ll want to be clear on:
- Lighting: make sure there’s plenty of it – you may need to bring your own lamp if it’s too dim
- Table size: if you don’t have much table space or wall space, you’ll have to get creative
- Restrictions: be aware of any restrictions – for example, if it’s outdoors you’ll have no wall space for a hanging display
- Plan: try mocking up your card display and having everything ready well ahead of time
2. Use what works
At any craft fair, you’ll see a few common setups that just work. Try using some of these – but remember to put your own stamp on them to make your cards stand out.
Tiered stands and risers
Tiered stands are the perfect way to display multiple cards over a smaller footprint. Plus, if they’re tall enough, your potential customers will be able to see them across the room. Plastic risers offer a neutral display stand while wood and other materials allow you to add some character. Finally, remember to mix up a tiered and flat display to make it more inviting.
Spinning displays
You’re bound to see spinning displays and wire racks at any craft fair and for good reason – they’re a great way to display lots of products over a small area and give customers a chance to engage with your cards. The downside is that these can be pricey, so consider searching for one second-hand or look to more tiered displays to fill the gap.
Grouped seasonal and event themes
By grouping cards by theme – whether that’s for birthdays, weddings or seasonal holidays like Christmas or Easter – you can make it quicker and easier for customers to find what they want. Get creative with arrangements – using baskets or vintage crates, for example – but always make sure passers-by can see your cards from a distance – after all, that’s what will draw people in.
Hanging displays
Hanging displays offer the perfect way to put your handmade cards front and centre – giving your display height and visibility. Consider using twine and pegs to create a flying display over your table, or create a pegboard to act as a backdrop to your booth.
Flat table layout
Lastly, don’t neglect your table layout – it forms the core of your craft show display. But resist the temptation to blend in – creative displays using props such as baskets, vintage books and floral décor can help you create a display people will remember.
3. Display your branding
If you have branding for your card-making – perhaps from your online store or a stamped logo on your products – it should be proudly on display at your craft fair stall. Whether it’s a backdrop with your logo or name, or a consistent colour that unites your brand, your stall should be instantly recognisable as yours.
4. Label and price your cards clearly
From prices on individual cards to signage – make sure everything is clearly legible so people know exactly what they’re getting. Be sure to include keywords that let people know exactly what makes your products special – whether it’s ‘eco-friendly’, ‘handmade’ or ‘hand-painted’.
5. Packaging and presentation
Packaging and presentation affect the perceived value of your cards, so this must be a focus for your craft fair card display:
- Try grouping products together – such as cards and their envelopes – with string or ribbon.
- ‘Thank you for purchasing’ cards can also add that finishing touch that helps connect with your customers.
- And finally, keep your cards looking perfect and free from dirt or damage by using cellophane bags and back boards to prevent them from bending.
